We are very excited about the two Solar Gardens we've installed in our area.

Shaw Solar completed the very first Community Solar Power Garden in La Plata County back in 2015, a 200 kilowatt (kW) garden in Ignacio. Since then we have also installed a second, a 50 kW garden on the roof of the Boys and Girls Club in Durango.

Solar power gardens are large solar arrays of which community members can buy or lease shares. The energy produced by their share is then attributed to the electric meter at their home or business through virtual net metering. In this way, individuals can reap the environmental and financial benefits of solar power, regardless of whether they rent, have poor solar access or roof space, or don’t have the upfront capital to invest in a system of their own.

Durango Solar Garden members can go solar and start saving on their energy costs without a large up-front expense. What they gain is instant access to solar, what they give up is the responsibility of owning their own system, because we monitor, maintain, insure, and guarantee the production of the  system.

Utility rates will continue to rise in the future. By signing up for the Durango Solar Garden, as rates rise, your savings will multiply. But not only will you be saving money, you will also have the peace of mind of knowing your home or business is powered by clean, local energy from the sun. The average Durango Solar Garden member will offset 4.77 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, which is equivalent to the savings from not driving your car for an entire year, or planting 122 trees!

Both Solar Gardens are currently full. But please contact us if you would like to be put on a waiting list or be contacted if new gardens come about. We are still waiting for LPEA to decide if new projects will be authorized in 2018 and beyond.
